The Australian War Memorial, in its section on the Anzac Day Tradition, says 'The Last Post is the trumpet or bugle call sounded at 10 pm each night to inform soldiers that they should be inside their quarters for the night. It is also sounded at military funerals and commemorative services ... to indicate that the soldier has completed his life's work and has entered into his rest.'
Listen to the full version of the Last Post. It is about 450k and so will probably take a minute or two to download. Click the 'start' button to listen to the Last Post once it has begun to download, or wait until it starts automatically.
To play this file on your computer you will need the QuickTime plug-in. You can get the plug-in (included with QuickTime) free from Apple for your computer.
