Professor Bruce Royan

Professor Bruce RoyanThe Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts is pleased to have secured Professor Bruce Royan, Chief Executive of the Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network (SCRAN) to address delegates at the opening plenary session. Bruce Royan has over 30 years experience in the field of digital cultural and information services. In 1996, he was appointed to create and manage SCRAN, the Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network.

SCRAN is a not-for-profit company jointly set up by Scotland's cultural institutions to create and deliver networked learning content and manage the resulting digital Intellectual Property Rights. Every school in Scotland and every university and college in the United Kingdom has purchased a SCRAN subscription, and SCRAN has recently concluded an agreement with the Art Museums Image Consortium (AMICO) in North America, to distribute their resource base in Europe. SCRAN currently gives access to over 1.25 million records, 160,000 of them including multimedia resources.

Professor Royan serves on the Steering Group of Culture Online in the UK and the Digitisation Advisory Panel of the UK New Opportunities Fund and is Chairman of the UK Metadata for Education Group. He is a Corporate Member of the British Computer Society and a Fellow of the Institute of Information Scientists, of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, of the Institute of Management, and of the Library Association. He is also Visiting Professor of Communication Arts at Edinburgh's Napier University.
