ausculture newsletter September 2006

Welcome to Australia's Culture and Recreation Portal Newsletter
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

September sees the celebration of the 50th anniversary since UTECOM and SILLIAC, the first full-blown computers got going in Australian universities (11 and 12 September) and since television was first broadcast in Australia (16 September) - a month to reflect on emerging and merging media across the culture sector, and how this has contributed to the emergence of an Australian identity.

This is Not Art Festival 2006 (28 September, Newcastle) will see 'hundreds of emerging young writers, media & music makers, artists, experimentös & activists in workshops, panels, presentations & forums: stepping up, dizzy & electrified, to make their mark.'

Meanwhile, throughout September, the six artists in Artifice associated with the Queensland Centre for Photography (QCP), have drawn pictographic histories by merging the fields of photography, painting, advertising, and popular culture, to create images beyond the realm of the everyday.

Merging and innovative also describes the design and architecture of a new Parramatta rail station and bus interchange link for emerging travellers - a 70 metre long art wall described as 'a rare example of urban coherence'. Merging emerging talent with world class improvisation for a new Australian jazz sound is the Mike Nock Trio Australia Tour (17-29 September).

Ngapartji Ngapartji, an inter-generational language-based theatre arts project based in Alice Springs, merges the ancient vowels of Pitjantjatjara with online learning as a pre-requisite for audience engagement for its world premiere as a full scale production at the Melbourne International Arts Festival. In contrast, from the temporal to the physical, Deniliquin is hosting a merging of 'utes' for a World Record Ute Muster.

Parramatta Rail Station - Sydney

Parramatta has linked its rail station with bus interchanges as part of an upgrade which has seen a number of new buildings designed by Hassell linked by a 70 metre ling art wall designed by McCregor Westlake Architecture. The result has been described as 'a rare example of urban coherence' (Paul McGillick, Indesign). The wall is an artistic form as well as acting as a retaining wall, platform edge and as a mask for other services.
