Promoting your website: linking to other cultural organisations (screen 3 of 8)

Link to other cultural organisations

One of the things a cultural organisation can do in Australia to get noticed on the Web is to link to, and be linked from, other cultural organisations.

In particular, Australian cultural sites should be listed in our GSearch engine(1). This is a free service.

You could also promote your website by having it listed, with other related cultural organisations, on the websites of other organisations. Does your local government, suburb or town have its own website? Does your State Government website have a screen that could link to your site? Are there tourist organisations that could link to you?

CitySearch directories, which are comprehensive online guides to GMelbourne(2), GSydney(3), and GCanberra(4), could be environments suitable for the advertising and promotion of your online services.

See the previous screen(5) for more ideas.

Why would other websites link to my site?

Other websites want to be noticed too, and if your site provides information that is relevant to their target users, they will want to link to you.

The better the service you provide to users the more likely they are to come back to your site. Linking to others - choosing quality sites to link to, and writing a brief description or review of them - adds value for your users.

When you build your website, contact related organisations and let them know your website's URL. Ask them if they would provide a link from their site to yours. You could provide a link to their site in exchange.

When your site is running, use automatic monitoring software(6) to determine what sites people come from when they enter your site. This way you can keep an eye on the effectiveness of these other links to your site and the success of your promotional campaign.

Pushing information to your users

You can also provide the opportunity for your users to receive information about your website - that can happen in a variety of ways. You might use a GChangeDetection(7) service, or provide a form for users to fill in and then you deliver an email newsletter to them every month promoting what's on your site and your organisation's upcoming activities. This sort of 'push' marketing can be a useful way of promoting particular activities to particular groups of users.

Push marketing may also involve software which can deliver news or stock market reports to your screen as the information updates. This software knows what you are interested in, and trawls the Net on your behalf to deliver this information to your computer. At present, most of these systems work by sending information to a screen saver provided by the push marketing company.
